Wishlist: customized off-the-shelf
These are sets of things customized, or that I can customize, to meet my needs. For example, to meet a specific need, if I have a number ore related items, I can go the next step and put them together into a useful system.
- An updated set of music added to my iPod or iPhone.
- Reliable, understandable, video amplifier so that I can split video signals throughout the house and have good - no, excellent - channel-independent TV reception in each room of the house.
- Buy an HRV (heat-recovery ventilator) that I can install myself, with metal fans and parts (not plastic).
- Webcam-based, Internet-accessible, security system throughout the house. Configure this security system so that I can easily check each cam remotely from my iPhone. Ideally have a couple of wireless IP-addressable webcams per room and open areas, programmed so that I can quickly install them whenever leaving for longer trips away from the house. The rest of my family would protest greatly if I had those cams installed while we were still inside the house.
- Intercom system throughout the house. 3 iPad/tablets, one on each floor. Current candidates are: 7" Lenovo, 7" 32G Blackberry. At their current price of $150 per, they have dropped into the affordable range, as long as they meet the following specs.
- Compatible with and connectible to networked Outlook calendar and contacts list.
- Wallmount support that allows easy removal. Near electrical outlet.
- Wireless. Touchscreen.
- Front camera facing user; 2nd camera facing out is a plus, but not necessary. Internal speakers.
- Video conferencing capability with other 2 tablets, but also with other home PCs and external PCs beyond the house firewall.
- Remain at low/no power 24/7 until called remotely from any of the other 2 tablets - or called from a networked or outside PC.
- When there's an incoming call, give a local ring that continues for a while in order to attract local attention. Then a receiving tablet user can accept the call as audio or video.
- Manual buttons and hand-manipulatable hardware function easily while tablet is secured to wall; in other words, pressing a button on the side does not require another hand to prevent the unit from slipping sideways.
- Voice-assisted text processing system for the iPad (or any other small computer-type communication device. I would find it useful to be able to edit and write seriously while sipping a latte and iPadding at a cafe. However, the pad is too small to use all the features of MS Word easily. I can access MS Word in complete form from the iPad (RDP to any of a number of my PCs); however, the diisplays are too small and the keyboard takes up half the screen. So it would be useful to mix and match touch, keyboarding, and voice; for example, touch to position the cursor, voice-instruct it to move left/right, voice to highlight the word/para and bold or do some other basic edit. Type what I need, then voice to save it, etc. There are many systems and apps that can do these kind of things; it only requires me to do the research and acquisitions, to make them useful.
- The perfect car, with the following features:
- Easily removable top or sun roof that is at least as large as on the XTrail.
- 4-wheel or all-wheel drive option.
- Good gas mileage.
- Trunk opens so that bottom of trunk is flush with back bottom edge of car (to make it easy to slide objects in/out).
- Bottom of trunk to be a plastic surface, rather than a fabric/felt/velvet. I will be carrying a lot of rather dirty gardening stuff and want a surface that is easy to clean.
- Fabric, rather than leather, interior.
- Flat surfaces on the dashboard. If the dashboard is totally curved, then there is no place to put glasses, papers, etc. The space is wasted unless I can use it to store small stuff.
- Very important option to turn off the auto door locking feature (if there wasn't a day that I didn't curse this feature in the Nissan...).
- Flat roof bars so that I can load 4x8 sheets of things from Home Depot when required.
- 4 doors; ability to seat 4 passengers.
- Snow tires/and Summer tires.
- Radio button controls on steering wheel.
- Bluetooth connection to cell phone.
- Plug connection to external device like an iPhone, or iPod. Power-base dock support for iPhone, in center of dashboard. Once iPhone is docked, it can use car speakers for communication.
- Back seats to fold down flush and flat with trunk floor. I need a horizontal surface to place plants and pots. If that surface is under an expanded sun roof, then I can put taller plants onto the surface and they can poke out through the roof.
- Windshield wiper on the back window.
